Walking

Great as a daily warmup, or when used as technical practice, the following “walking” exercise is simple yet effective. It is probably one of the most effective exercises in this book. After realizing that the main obstacle keeping me from progressing in my scales was crossing strings, I started “walking.” I practiced only crossing strings—and it worked! I still practice this every day, and my scales now feel secure. In fact, when I do hit a snag, I’ll work on the right-hand string crossing all by itself (see Problem Solving in Scales on page 90).
